Brewing Scholar Breaking New Ground at Hocking College
Longtime readers of our blog have likely heard of the Patrick Gangwer Brewing Scholarship, a fund established by Granville’s Three Tigers Brewing in memory of their beloved brew master who passed away in 2019 at the age of 41. Students chosen for the scholarship are afforded four semesters of tuition to the fermentation science program at Hocking College in Nelsonville.
The first recipient of the scholarship, Steve Bradbury of Jackson, Ohio, made the decision to forego the scholarship in order to return to surgical nursing during a time when hospital staffing is pushed to the limit.
Hocking College re-opened the scholarship opportunity and awarded the funds to Gwyn Armstrong, the first woman to enroll in the school’s fermentation science program. Armstrong is currently in her second semester at Hocking and has already spearheaded the program’s first woman-brewed beer. Pink Boots IPA was released in November at Star Brick Brewing, the program’s hands-on brewery lab and public taproom located at The Lodge at Hocking College in Nelsonville. The beer was brewed with Yakima Chief’s Pink Boots hop blend: $3 per pound of hops sold is donated to the Pink Boots Society’s scholarship fund for women in brewing.
Three Tigers continues to raise funds for future Gangwer scholarship recipients: be sure to give them a follow on social media for upcoming fundraising drives. You can also give directly at anytime by visiting threetigersbrewing.com/gangwarriors
