Fresh Hop Ohio Update
It’s the best time of year for craft beer lovers, as the annual hop harvest gives breweries the opportunity to make unique beers with freshly picked, undried, whole cone hops. The fresh hop/wet hop beers are only available in late summer/early fall and are bursting with robust aromas and flavors that can only come from unprocessed hops.
We’ve been tracking the fresh hop and wet hop beers made by Ohio craft breweries using Ohio-grown hops over at ohiocraftbeer.org/freshhopohio. As of this morning there are more than two dozen beers in our fresh hop guide, produced by breweries all over the state. Take a look at a few beers available now or coming soon:
- Ohio Wet and Fresh IPA by The Brew Kettle: This brew uses freshly harvested Alleigh hops – a variety initially bred and proprietarily grown in Ohio – from Barn Talk Hops in Wadsworth. This beer will go on tap at all four northeast Ohio Brew Kettle locations on Tuesday, Sept. 27 in conjunction with Ohio Pint Day.
- Box of Rain IPA by Sixth Sense Brewing: Another annual fresh hop release, this beer features Chinook and Cascade hops from Morning Dew Hop Farm in Albany, Ohio. Box of Rain is now available on draft or in cans for carryout at the Sixth Sense taproom in Jackson.
- Gold Hill golden ale by Three Tigers Brewing Company: If you lean more toward easy drinking beers than IPAs, but still want the fresh hop experience, give Gold Hill a try. This smooth, refreshing ale features Chinook and Columbus hops from Morris Family Hops Farm and Welsh Hills Hops. Gold Hill hits the taps at Three Tigers in Granville this Friday, Sept. 23.
The list of fresh hop and wet hop beers over at ohiocraftbeer.org/freshhopohio is growing as the harvest season progresses, so be sure to bookmark it to check for new additions. Enjoy these once-a-year beers at a brewery near you!
