After weeks upon weeks in the tank, the Oktoberfest Märzen Lager from Wolf’s Ridge Brewing is finally ready. The downtown Columbus brewery will hold a public party on Saturday, September 1 in their new Hickory Room events space. Wolf’s Ridge will have 1-liter steins for sale at the event while supplies last. Oktoberfest will be available on draft and in 500 mL bottles to go. Full details at facebook.com/wolfsridgebrew
2 Tones Brewing started construction of their new brewery and taproom in Whitehall this week. The 2-year-old production-only brewery announced the move to the 3,400-square-foot facility at 4539 E. Cowboy Bernie, the new Imperial IPA from Columbus Brewing Company, hits store shelves this week. Prominently featuring experimental Bru-1 hops from Brulotte Farms, Cowboy Bernie has a refreshing, firm bitterness and aromas of orange, orchard fruit, pineapple and spice. CBC beers will soon be available in Northwest Ohio as well, as the brewery inked a distribution deal this week.
GREATER CLEVELAND
Destination Cleveland will once again have a booth at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver next month, and this time they’ll be pouring a uniquely Cleveland beer. Shoreway IPA is a collaboration hazy IPA brewed at Terrestrial Brewing with input from 16 other Cleveland breweries. Working Class Brewery will feature several of their special release stouts this Saturday, September 1, including Peanut Butter, Coconut, Cinnamon Chipotle, Vanilla, Hazelnut, and Coffee. $1 from the sale of each pint of stout will benefit the Cleveland Animal Protective League. The Albino Stout at the Butcher & the Brewer is one of those “must-try” beers. So when the downtown brewery announced this week that they’ve released an Imperial Albino Stout with double the malt, chocolate, vanilla and coffee, it was a little more than intriguing. Ignite Brewing Company announced expanded public hours starting this week. After months of construction, the Barberton brewery and taproom is sparkling new and ready for you to view. The Ohio Craft Brewers Association’s Executive Committee has appointed Shannon Mohr to the OCBA Board of Directors. Mohr, the sales & marketing manager for Maumee Bay Brewing Company in Toledo, will assume the seat of Black Cloister Brewing Company’s Tom Schaeffer, who resigned from the board to focus on his ecclesiastical duties as a Lutheran pastor. Mohr will serve the remainder of Schaeffer’s term, which expires in July 2019.
Earnest Brew Works has been growing at a steady pace since opening in south Toledo in late 2016, and continues to add fermentation capacity to meet demand. With regional growth in mind, Earnest signed a distribution contract to provide kegs to retailers in the Toledo market. Jackie O’s Brewery will release Cellar Cuvée 11, a blend of 5 barley wine-esque bourbon barrel aged beers, today at 11 a.m. The beers used in this year’s bottling were Brick Kiln, Skipping Stone, Iron Furnace, Matriarch, and a 100% Maris Otter malt barley wine that is yet to be released. The finished beer embodies a tootsie roll soaked in tawny port and encased in torched sugar. This Saturday, Maple Lawn Brewery will again host a guest brewers tap takeover at the brewery in Pomeroy, with nine new beers making their debut. Homebrewers from Ohio, Kentucky and West Virginia were invited to brew their recipes at Maple Lawn for the event. The resulting beers run the gamut of styles, from stouts to hoppy pales, with some surprises in between. Rhinegeist’s light and bright Lager, Cheetah, will be released in six packs starting next week, joining 12 packs that have been available for the past month. The expansion of Cheetah cans into the market means another of Rhinegeist’s big cats, Cougar blonde ale, will be removed from the core can lineup. How have we gone eight months on this blog without once mentioning a dunkelweizen? Lucky for us, Nine Giant Brewing brought their dunkel, Like Clockwork, back on tap this week. All the wonderful banana and clove Hefeweizen goodness, but with a beautiful, rich caramel malt backbone. If you’ve ever taken the brewery tour at Lock 27 Brewing, you’ve undoubtedly come across Stumpf, the game in which players try to hammer their opponents’ nails into a stump. If you’re feeling good about your manual dexterity, you’ve got the opportunity to be crowned the Stumpf champion at Lock 27’s Loktoberfest. Qualifying rounds will be held on Saturday, September 8 at both the downtown and Centerville locations. The championship competition is on Saturday, September 15.
